For Michael Torres, owner of Bronx Oven & Pastry Co., baking is both craft and community service. Operating in Riverdale, the bakery has been serving Bronx residents for 20 years, offering artisanal bread, pastries, and custom cakes.

Torres emphasizes quality and locally sourced ingredients, prioritizing organic flour, fresh dairy, and seasonal produce. The bakery’s offerings range from classic sourdough loaves and croissants to culturally inspired pastries reflecting the Bronx’s diversity.

Beyond product quality, Bronx Oven & Pastry Co. is deeply involved in the community. The bakery offers baking classes to youth, hosts local tasting events, and participates in charity drives, donating unsold products to shelters and community kitchens. “We’re feeding more than stomachs; we’re feeding pride, tradition, and connection in the borough,” Torres explains.

The bakery started as a small storefront and has grown to include three locations, all family-run. Staff training and retention are key, and Torres sees his team as ambassadors of the Bronx baking culture. “Being a New Yorker means resilience and creativity, and our staff embodies that,” he notes.

Operating a small bakery in New York comes with challenges like rising ingredient costs, strict health regulations, and competitive markets. Torres navigates these by emphasizing customer loyalty, seasonal product innovation, and community engagement.

Looking ahead, Bronx Oven & Pastry Co. plans to expand its educational programs and continue celebrating cultural diversity through special pastry lines, keeping the Bronx at the forefront of New York’s culinary scene.
