In Astoria, Queens, FitWorks Gym has become a hub for health, wellness, and community engagement. Founded by Angela Moreno 5 years ago, FitWorks provides a full range of fitness services, from strength training and cardio programs to yoga, pilates, and specialized youth classes.
Moreno’s mission is to make fitness accessible to all. “We want every resident of Queens to have a place to improve their health and confidence,” she explains. FitWorks offers group classes, personal training, and corporate wellness programs. The gym also organizes outdoor fitness events and charity runs, encouraging community participation.
Beyond physical fitness, FitWorks focuses on education. Moreno hosts nutrition workshops and lifestyle seminars, partnering with local schools and youth organizations. “Health is a community effort,” she says. “We’re teaching kids, adults, and seniors how to make sustainable choices.”
FitWorks has grown steadily, adding state-of-the-art equipment, expanded studio space, and specialized training programs. Moreno’s team now includes 15 certified instructors, all Queens residents, reflecting the borough’s diversity and commitment to community.
Operating a small business in New York comes with challenges, including high operating costs, seasonal attendance fluctuations, and competition. Moreno navigates these by creating flexible membership options, offering innovative classes, and fostering a supportive gym culture.
Being a New Yorker, Moreno believes, is about resilience, adaptability, and creativity. “Queens is a mosaic of cultures, and that inspires us to create inclusive, high-quality fitness experiences,” she says.
FitWorks plans to expand wellness initiatives, introduce online training options, and continue its partnership with local schools to promote long-term health education across the borough.
